Laundry Tips – comforters & duvets

There’s nothing quite like slipping into a bed made with freshly cleaned, crisp linens at the end of a long day. The comfort, the softness, and the soothing scent of freshly laundered bedding can significantly enhance your overall sleep experience. For many, the texture and cleanliness of their bedding can influence sleep quality and mood. The way you care for your bedding can make a noticeable difference, and understanding proper laundry techniques is essential for maintaining their freshness, comfort, and longevity.

Selecting the Right Linens

Choosing the appropriate linens for your home involves a variety of considerations. Personal taste, skin sensitivities, and the intended use all play a role. For instance, some people prefer the luxurious feel of Egyptian cotton sheets, while others might prioritize hypoallergenic fabrics if they have sensitive skin or allergies.

When selecting linens, think about the climate you live in. Light, breathable fabrics like linen or percale are excellent choices for warmer environments, while flannel or flannel blends may be better suited for colder seasons.

Bedding for Short-Term Rentals and Small Hotels

While personal bedding choices focus on comfort and personal preference, those involved in managing short-term rentals or small hotels should consider practicality and versatility. I highly recommend investing in interchangeable linens—meaning that the sets can be mixed and matched easily, simplifying laundry routines and ensuring that your guests always have a clean, inviting bed.

Having a variety of standard-sized linens allows you to rotate bedding efficiently, reducing wear and tear and minimizing laundry time. It’s also beneficial to choose linens that are durable, machine washable, and easy to maintain—these qualities are crucial in hospitality settings, where hygiene and quick turnover are priorities.

Fragrance or No?

Some individuals love the fresh scent of lavender, vanilla, or citrus, while others prefer their linens scent-free, especially if they have allergies or sensitive skin.

If you enjoy fragrance, there are multiple ways to infuse scent into your bedding without using artificial chemical-laden products. You can add a few drops of essential oil—like lavender or eucalyptus—to a cloth, dryer sheet, or dryer ball before drying, allowing it to impart a natural scent to the linens.

Washing Comforters and Duvets

Comforters and duvets require different cleaning methods compared to sheets and pillowcases. Many comforters are machine washable, but some heavier options, filled with down or synthetic fibers, may need specialized care. Always check the manufacturer’s label for cleaning instructions.

When washing comforters, use a gentle cycle with warm water and a mild, fragrance-free detergent. It’s best to wash them separately to prevent uneven cleaning and to avoid overloading your machine. If your comforter is particularly large, consider using a commercial-sized washer or taking it to a laundromat equipped with heavy-duty machines.

Drying comforters can be a lengthy process, often requiring a large capacity dryer on a low heat setting. Adding dryer balls helps fluff the filling evenly and prevent clumping. At Let’s Talk Dirty Laundry, our dryers rotate direction every few minutes during the drying cycle – this greatly reduces the clumping effect that can occur when washing comforters.
